Why Do My Gums Hurt?

Gum Pain Causes

Often minor irritations can cause gum pain, however, in other instances, it can be a sign of a more serious issue. If you experience throbbing gum pain, it may be caused by one of the following conditions:

  • Improper brushing techniques: A prevalent cause of sore gums can be directly tied to how you brush your teeth. If you’re applying too much pressure, you risk damaging your gums.

  • Improper flossing techniques: Gum bleeding can be caused by vigorous flossing, especially if you don’t floss the recommended once daily.

  • Canker sores or mouth ulcers: Though they’re not contagious, canker sores can be painful. They can appear on gums and other areas inside the mouth.

  • Gum disease: Red, bleeding, and inflamed gums are all symptoms of gum disease. Gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease, is often a result of poor oral hygiene. If not addressed, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis and may lead to tooth loss.

  • Hormonal changes: An increase of blood flow to the gums can usually be triggered by a change in hormone levels, like during pregnancy, and can lead to gum swelling and sensitivity.

  • Oral injuries: Minor cuts and scrapes can occur and cause gum soreness and bleeding. Irritations from dental appliances such as braces and dentures can also cause gum discomfort and sensitivity.

  • Tooth abscess: A tooth infection that tends to form near the root can lead to gum swelling and severe gum pain. See your dental professional right away if you suspect you have an infected tooth.

  • Tobacco use: Whether smoked or chewed, tobacco is detrimental to your oral and overall health. The best course of action is to stop using tobacco products altogether to avoid damaging your gums, teeth, and body.

If you’re unsure of what may be causing your gum pain, make an appointment with your dental professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
