Does Mouthwash Expire?

Mouthwash does have an expiration date. Usually, mouthwash can last about two to three years, however, once opened, it’s best to toss it after a year.

How Do I Know if Mouthwash is Expired?

Expired mouthwash can develop a strange or off-putting smell, change color, and have an odd consistency. Most mouthwashes have an expiration date printed directly onto the bottle, however, if you cannot find one it’s best to not use it.

Is it Safe to Use Expired Mouthwash?

An oral rinse can help brighten up your smile, freshen breath, and keep gums in good condition. However, once expired, active ingredients may not be as effective anymore. Bacteria from your mouth can develop within the rinse and certain formulations may become unbalanced and unsafe to use.

What to Do with Expired Mouthwash?

To stay on the safe side, don’t swish with expired mouthwash. Instead, pour expired mouthwash down the drain to toss it.
